Tonight: UN Rights Chief Navi Pillay to Headline Prize Ceremony with Terror Sympathizer Mona Seif

UN Watch urges High Commissioner Pillay to condemn pro-terror statements by Mona Seif

GENEVA, October 8, 2013 – UN rights chief Navi Pillay will headline a controversial Geneva ceremony today featuring a terrorism sympathizer as one three final nominees for what is billed as the world’s top human rights prize.

In a letter to High Commissioner Pillay, the non-governmental group UN Watch urged her to make clear that she condemns the repeated statements by nominee Mona Seif that opposed calls by Amnesty and Human Rights Watch for Hamas to stop rocket attacks on civilians, which she justified as “resistance.”

Amnesty protests Hamas executions, but backs prize for defender of Hamas attacks on Israeli civilians

Amnesty International is protesting planned public executions by Hamas, but is backing a human rights prize nomination for an Egyptian activist who defends and justifies Hamas’ firing of deadly rockets against Israeli civilians.

The “Attorney General” of the terrorist organization said last week that several convicted “criminals” are set to be executed in public as a “lesson” to others, after this week’s Muslim religious festival of Eid al-Fitr.

“This and other recent announcements by Hamas authorities that they will carry out further executions are deeply disturbing,” said Philip Luther, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Program at Amnesty International.

However, Amnesty continues to back their nomination of Mona Seif for the world’s top human rights prize, even though she forcefully opposed Amnesty’s call on Hamas to stop targeting civilians, in repeated tweets to her 180,000 followers.
