Hillel Neuer slams Richard Falk in UN debate for “9/11 inside job” remarks

UN Watch Statement
Delivered by Mr. Hillel Neuer, March 21, 2011
UN Human Rights Council, 16th Session
Agenda Item 7:  “Human rights situation in Palestine
and other occupied Arab territories”
Interactive dialogue with Special Rapporteur Richard Falk

Mr. Falk,  why does your report fail to address the terrorism perpetrated by Hamas and other Palestinian terror organizations?  The only reference to Hamas is in paragraph 18, where its members are described as victims.

We note that on March 9, 2010, the Palestinian news agency Ma’an quoted you as saying that the Palestinian Authority formally asked you to resign, citing the fact, as you put it, “that I’m a partisan of Hamas.”

We are concerned that your justifications for Hamas are integrally related to a broader pattern and practice in your work when it comes to terrorism, conflicting with the applicable Code of Conduct.

In this regard, permit me to read from this letter which I received from the bureau of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, on 24 January:

“In response to your letter to the Secretary-General on the subject of a recent blog post by Mr. Richard Falk…  You specifically refer to Mr. Falk’s allegations of an “apparent cover-up” related to the 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. The Secretary-General condemns these remarks. He has repeatedly stated his view that any such suggestion is preposterous — and an affront to the memory of the more than 3,000 people who died in the attack.”

The Secretary-General repeated these remarks a few days later in an address to this council. US Ambassador Susan Rice added that your comments were “despicable and deeply offensive.”

Mr. Falk, we regret that following our cooperation with the SG, you resorted to hostile retaliatory action, by issuing an official press release on 28 January that attacked UN Watch, using ad hominem statements. In the release, you denied endorsing the 9/11 conspiracy theory, and insisted the comments were in your personal capacity.

However, on October 26, you conducted a lengthy interview, in your official UN capacity, with Stephen Barrett of the website Truth-Jihad.com, a major proponent of the 911 conspiracy theory.  When the host stated that “9/11 was an inside job” and asked you,  “Can we change the way Middle East Policy is perceived by calling into question the events of 9/11?”   You answered, “I think it’s possible… it’s important to speak the truth.”

The rest of your remarks fully endorsed the comments of the host.  You also said, “The power elite that is running this country… have to do everything they can to discredit those that are questioning the official version of what took place on 9/11.”  (Click here for transcript and YouTube video.)

Mr. President, we call on this council to follow the Secretary-General and condemn Mr. Falk’s noxious approach to terrorism.
